One of the jobs me and my fellow corrections officers are responsible for each day is safety within the facility. Not only are we trying to keep each other safe, we have to protect inmates, visitors, and the staff of the prison too. In order to maintain a certain level of safety inside the jail, we do a few different things every day that are designed to keep the inmates from getting their hands on anything that can be used to hurt someone else.
We start our shift by doing surprise cell inspections throughout the facility. Sometimes we will hit the same cell a few times a week, other times we will randomly select a number of cells. The goal here is to locate any contraband and let the inmates know that they are not going to be able to hide anything in that area because we will find it.
The visitor center is where we have the most likely chances of types of contraband passing hands, so we do several physical searches of both inmate and visitor while they are in our area. We even listen to inmates using the phone in the jail, and up until recently this resource has really changed how we maintain safety in the jail.
Once Securus Technologies installed their updated inmate telephone call monitoring system in our prison, we were able to listen to calls in a new light. The LBS software is able to scan calls and detect certain chatter that would enable us to locate and remove contraband from the jail.
