Amorphophallus Titanum Plant

This plant is nicknamed Little Dougie. It has been growing at the Costa Mesa college for 10 years and weighs more than 30 pounds. It is about 5 feet in height. These flowers can get up to 200 pounds and have a disgusting smell caused when beetles pollinate it. Instructors and students pollinate these flowers by hand.

The name ‘corpse flower’ comes from the smell because it is similar to something that is dead. They have magenta colored petals when they open that look similar to s skirt that surrounds the plant’s spadix. It takes a full decade for the plant to have it’s first bloom that only lasts between 24 and 48 hours. They then only bloom once in every three to five years.

Why Our Prison Loves Working with Securus Technologies

One of the jobs me and my fellow corrections officers are responsible for each day is safety within the facility. Not only are we trying to keep each other safe, we have to protect inmates, visitors, and the staff of the prison too. In order to maintain a certain level of safety inside the jail, we do a few different things every day that are designed to keep the inmates from getting their hands on anything that can be used to hurt someone else.

We start our shift by doing surprise cell inspections throughout the facility. Sometimes we will hit the same cell a few times a week, other times we will randomly select a number of cells. The goal here is to locate any contraband and let the inmates know that they are not going to be able to hide anything in that area because we will find it.

The visitor center is where we have the most likely chances of types of contraband passing hands, so we do several physical searches of both inmate and visitor while they are in our area. We even listen to inmates using the phone in the jail, and up until recently this resource has really changed how we maintain safety in the jail.

Once Securus Technologies installed their updated inmate telephone call monitoring system in our prison, we were able to listen to calls in a new light. The LBS software is able to scan calls and detect certain chatter that would enable us to locate and remove contraband from the jail. We trust Securus Technologies because not only are they in 2,600 jails throughout this country, the entire staff of 1,000 employees are all dedicated and working hard towards the single objective of creating a safer world we can all live in.

Betsy DeVos: Giving Parents Back Control of Education

Betsy DeVos, Secretary of Education for the United States, is well-known for her philanthropist efforts in the field of public education. As a reformer, she has long been politically involved in securing a better system for quality education for all children, regardless of their background or circumstances. Her interest in the education system began in her early childhood, with her mother as a public school teacher. And later, she began digging even deeper when her own children went to school and she became a first-hand witness to the unfairness of the system. This, coupled with the example of hard-working leaders in her hometown, motivated her to act, and she became a mentor for children at risk in Grand Rapids schools. After filling this capacity for 15 years, DeVos became a leader in the reformist movement to provide better education choices for children, as well as more options for parents. DeVos received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and is married to Dick DeVos, who is also politically active. Together they founded the Windquest Group, a firm dedicated to enterprise and investment management.

They became publicly and politically involved in the education movement in 1990, when Dick Devos was elected for the State Board of Education in Michigan. At the same time, Betsy DeVos, known for her philanthropy, served on the boards of Children First America, and the American Education Reform Council; both charities which were aiming to improve educational choice through measures such as vouchers or tax forms. After a setback in 2000, when they attempted to change the Michigan state constitution to allow vouchers and tax-credit scholarships, Betsy DeVos founded the Great Lakes Education Project, which is today known as the American Federation for Children, on which she is chairman.

She also chaired for the All Children Matter organization, which her husband worked together with John Walton to create. However, after looking at their many organizations that they were affiliated with, they determined to organize their main efforts to make a smoother-working movement. After a bit of work, they have experienced great success with American Federation for Children as an umbrella organization, affiliated with the Alliance for School Choice. As the 11th Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos plans to work with President Trump to continue the education reform movement. Having had success in empowering parents with new education choices in twenty-five states, as well as the District of Columbia, DeVos is committed to providing higher education choices for students on a career path and education settings control to parents by returning control of education to states and localities. Her aim is to provide both parents and students with safe, quality education. You can also follow her on twitter (@Betsy DeVos)

Active American Groups Defending Civil Liberties

Even in the new millennium the last vestiges of hatred and discrimination have not been forgotten. Those belonging to certain racial groups as well as refugees and migrants have been the brunt of persecution, the likes of which would have made the Gestapo proud.

But perhaps the most saddening notion is that this aggression and hostility toward our fellow men, women and children is not restricted to the fringes of our society but perpetrated by the man in the White House.

Despite this latest tide of discrimination and hatred, the vast majority of Americans believe that banding together and lifting the downtrodden is the only way to put an end to brutality and create a better world. Read more: Michael Larcey | Twitter and Michael Larcey | Facebook

If you feel the same, you are in the company of folks like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and many more. The following article will introduce you to many forward-thinking individuals who have formed organizations and groups that fight for civil liberties and human rights.

The Border Angels

All across the US-Mexican border, the rights of humans are in danger now more than ever. Trump’s aggression against those he feels are responsible for financial and social disruption is not only misplaced. This is where the border angels work to protect the rights of migrants and those in need. Regular educational programs and seminars are only part of the services they provide in this region.

National Immigration Law Center

In an effort to extend a hand to those immigrants and especially those who have found themselves in strained financial states, this law center offers solutions to their plight. In addition to educational and orientation programs, the national Immigration Law Center works to provide advocacy and policy analysis for each situation. More information can be found at the National Immigration Law Center Web Site.

The Lacey and Larkin Border Fund

Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey established the Border Fund to provide financial resources to those advocacy groups working in and around the Arizona area. The two men also founded the Village voice and Phoenix New Times periodical. When they received a generous sum of money as a settlement for a clear case of abuse of authority, they immediately donated the resources to those who work to prevent this type of abuse.

CHIRLA (The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles)

Immigrants and refugees come from across the globe to seek a better life in sunny California. CHIRLA works with the many different ethnicities, races and political refugees that arrive in the Los Angeles area. As an advocacy group, CHIRLA not only defends the rights of these people, but also works to provide education programs that improve their lives as well.

Final Notes — these are only a few of the many organizations in operation today to fight for human rights and defend the downtrodden. If you believe that lifting your fellow man, woman and child is the path to a better tomorrow, don’t sit this one out. Your skills, time or resources are in great need, find a way to put some action to those beliefs.

ECU Reports Much Optimism In Their Efforts

The End Citizens United website has recently posted several articles regarding excellent progress being made in their efforts to reform campaign finance encroachments. The ECU is committed to engaging Democrats in changing how money is given to candidates to run their campaigns and more transparency becoming available for US voters.

President and executive director of End Citizens United, Tiffany Muller, delves into the Russia influence that has recently come under investigation in her post on the ECU website. It’s been reported that Russia may have influenced the outcome of the 2016 presidential election by putting digital ads “out there.” It is still uncertain exactly how that came about or who was backing this unfair and outrageous tactic but, as Tiffany puts it “…loopholes the size of the Kremlin exist..” making it possible for this to happen. Our citizens are starting to realize that there should be much more transparency and that if we are to continue to operate as a true democracy “Congress must do better.”

In addition, the 2018 House election cycle is now on the horizon. The ECU has named seventeen candidates that will receive money from ECU supporters through its PAC. It’s projected that $35 million will be raised which is $10 million above what was raised for candidates in the 2016 race. The first quarter already reports $4 million that has been raised through donations from 100,000 donors. End Citizens United looks at candidates who have decided to run and then makes sure that they only support those whose philosophies on this much-needed reform run parallel to what ECU is trying to achieve. Volunteers who were recruited in Montana exposed Greg Gianforte’s unlawful acceptance of money which went against state and federal campaign finance laws. These revelations can hurt a candidate’s chances of election and the ECU also focusses on this aspect of electing representatives in a democracy such as the US. More and more people are becoming aware of how much this hurts the country and the ECU is determined to educate the people on who they are voting for.

ECU screens candidates partly through a questionnaire they’re required to fill out. This eleven question form gathers information about whether the candidate agrees with or opposes the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision in addition to their views on policy such as the KOCH Act. This act demands “dark money organizations” to disclose the names of major contributors at the end of televised political ads. The seventeen house endorsements are Nannette Barragan, Salud Carbajal, Scott Peters, Norma Torres, Elizabeth Esty, Charlie Crist, Stephanie Murphy, John Yarmuth, Anthony Brown, Jim McGovern, Ann McLane Kuster, Carol Shea-Porter, Josh Gottheimer, Louise Slaughter, Tom Suozzi, Paul Tonko and David Cicilline.

DeVos Offers a New Vision of Education at Summit

DeVos was in Salt Lake City on May 9th for the annual ASU+GSV Technology Summit. She spent the day visiting the Granite Technical Institute, part of the Utah’s innovative “Pathways Program,” which is meant to prepare students to enter the workplace with the technical skills necessary for today’s economy. Afterwards, DeVos told an audience of industry and government officials that we are only beginning to see the role technology can play in education. The Secretary said that American was trying to use a 19th Century “Prussian” model to compete in a 21st Century global economy. “I doubt you would design a system that’s focused on inputs rather than outputs; that prioritizes seat-time over mastery; that moves kids through an assembly line without stopping to ask whether they’re actually ready for the next step or that’s more interested in preserving the status quo rather than embracing necessary change.” DeVos said the Federal Government should not hamstring the states in their efforts to find new solutions to the challenges of education in the 21st Century. Read more about their foundation at dbdvfoundation.org.

Later in the day, while answering questions from the Jeanne Allen, the CEO of the Center For Education Reform, Secretary Betsy DeVos reaffirmed her support for school choice as the path to innovation. Student outcomes shouldn’t be based on their zip code argued DeVos. “All children should have an equal opportunity for a great education and we are committed to empowering parents to be able to make more of those decisions on behalf of their children,” The Secretary likened the choice parents make about their children education to other choices we make as consumers. “If you can’t get cell phone service in your living room, then your particular provider is failing you. You should have the option to find a network that does work.”

Also during her keynote speech at the ASU+GSV Summit, Secretary DeVos set her sights beyond K-12, discussing the future of higher education. The Secretary raised the possibility of scrapping the Higher Education Act, suggesting it was time for a fresh start to tertiary education. “Why would we reauthorize an act that’s 50–60 years old and that has continued to be amended,” DeVos asked? “Why wouldn’t we start afresh and talk about what we need in this century and beyond for educating and helping our young people — and adults — learn? The world has changed. We have many adults who are well into careers who want to go back and get a different kind of education. We should be considering the needs of individuals and students, not a system so much.” Chief among changes discussed was a new approach to accreditation, concentrating more on certifying students as competent in certain skill sets as opposed to certifying institutions.
