Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are migrants’ rights activists originating from Phoenix, Arizona. They are the minds behind the Front Page Confidential and the Phoenix New Times, and they are using these newsletters and websites to influence the people about their stance on the issue of migration.
They are persuading the public to accept the migrants coming into the United States and helping them to develop a comfortable life in America. One of the things that they wanted to share with their readers is to help the migrants become documented individuals and helping them find a job.
The two are passionate about their advocates of assisting the migrant people, and they even set up a private fund named the Larkin and Lacey Private Fund to help out the migrants.
However, not everyone is supporting their actions. Several individuals in Phoenix, Arizona, does not like the idea of looking after the migrants coming into the United States, especially if they are undocumented. One of the critics of the migrant influx into the United States is Joe Arpaio, the former sheriff of the Maricopa County.
He warned against the migrants, saying that if he caught them without any documents to present, he would automatically deport them back to where they came from. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin knew him so much, and they are advising the migrants not to engage in any discussion with him because he would belittle them.
The two recommended filing charges against Joe Arpaio so that the county attorney’s office could collect all of the complaints against him and arrest him if he continues to profile and discriminate the local population of Phoenix racially.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin also have an unpleasant experience with Joe Arpaio and his men. In 2007, the two were picked up by unknown men, and they were transported to two different locations. Joe Arpaio interviewed them, and he told Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin that they would be sent to the jail because of publishing confidential jury information online, aside from the publishing of his private address without his consent.
Joe Arpaio immediately gathered evidence against Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin and took them to court. The lawyer who helped the two activists managed to win the case, and it was later on dismissed because of the lack of substantial evidence that would indict someone like Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. Years after their arrest and the subsequent dismissal of their case, Michael Lacey, and Jim Larkin decided to file charges against the Maricopa County, to pay for the humiliation that they experienced and the stress that they felt while inside the prison.
They won the lawsuit and were awarded $3.75 million in cash. Michael and Jim used the money that they received to create the Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund and helped those who are in dire need. Joe Arpaio, on the other hand, was arrested years later by the county attorney’s office because of his continued violation of the warning sent to him.
