Larkin & Lacey Speak Out On Arpaio’s Pardoning

There are several instances in The U.S history where various presidents have made controversial pardons. However, the most controversial one happened recently when President Donald Trump pardoned America’s toughest sheriff from Maricopa County, Joe Arpaio.

There’s a lot that can be spoken about Joe Arpaio but one of his notorious acts was the wrongful arrest of the two former newspapermen Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. The duo gave Joe Arpaio sleepless nights while serving as the sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona.

Over a decade ago, several agents from the Maricopa County selective enforcement Unit came knocking at the doors of Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin and forcefully took them into custody. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin at that particular time were both working with the Village Voice Newspaper. Michael Lacey was serving as the Executive editor and Jim Larkin as the Chief Executive Officer.

The two newspapermen had earlier published several other stories that brought to the limelight major scandals in various institutions.

Since taking office in 992, Joe Arpaio became the talk of the town because of his administrative style. He introduced punitive and measures that made the lives of many inmates unbearable.

He was accused of torturing inmates and even killing others. His troubles started when Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin began investigating his operations in the institutions.

The revelations were shocking and Joe Arpaio was found guilty of committing murder and torture of several inmates.

He was also accused of diverting funds meant for prison into his personal accounts. It was such revelations that made Arpaio and his cahoots to lock up Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin behind bars.

Despite the charges and public outcry, Arpaio continued with his crooked leadership styles and encouraged his employees to racial profile Latino people. He was however relieved his duties after media houses throughout the country highlighted his heinous acts. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were later awarded over $3 million by the Maricopa County for wrongful arrest.

How dies Trump Come in?

After being relieved of his duties, Arpaio remained in a precarious situation. First of all, he was charged with contempt of court during the Melendres case. However, Arpaio happened to be an experienced politician and that is how he caught the attention of Donald Trump and his presidential campaign. During the initial presidential campaigns, Arpaio indicated his willingness to support President Donald Trump and that is how he got his way to the Oval Office. Donald Trump even in one of his campaign speeches hinted that he would pardon Joe Arpaio if he got elected.

The aftermath

During his tenure as the sheriff in Maricopa County, the Latino community was largely segregated and undermined. Arpaio together with his allies and the police under his command helped propagate his racist policies.

However, human rights movements and some media houses vowed to stand by the Latino community and defend them from Arpaio.
